Certified Optical Fibre Installer (COFI)

Hands-on practical training for professional fibre installers: cables, closures, splicing, termination, testing and documentation to industry standards.

Overview

COFI builds the core skills required to install and commission fibre optic infrastructure safely and to specification. From selecting the right cable and components to preparing, splicing and terminating fibres, the course emphasises best practice for reliability, maintainability and testability across enterprise, campus and access networks.

Through guided practical labs you’ll use industry tools and equipment to perform fusion splicing, connector termination and enclosure build-outs. You’ll complete insertion-loss, optical return loss and OTDR tests, interpret results against acceptance criteria, and produce the documentation customers require for handover.

Features

Workshop-centric: real cables, closures, ODFs and patching
Fusion splicing & connector termination practice
ILM, ORL & OTDR testing with result interpretation
Comprehensive manual and checklists for field use
Pass the assessment to gain Certified Optical Fibre Installer (COFI) status

Key Outcomes

  • Plan and prepare safe fibre installation work (risk, method statements, PPE)
  • Select suitable cables, closures, connectors and accessories for each environment
  • Prepare cables, strip/jacket, cleave and fusion splice to low loss targets
  • Terminate connectors and verify end-face quality against IEC 61300-3-35
  • Build and dress closures and ODFs with correct fibre management and labelling
  • Perform ILM/ORL and OTDR tests; read traces, event tables and link maps
  • Diagnose common faults and re-work to achieve acceptance criteria
  • Produce commissioning reports and customer handover documentation

Who is it for? Field installers, technicians, and contractors working on enterprise, campus, utilities, transport and access networks.
